In India itself, more than 400,000 children are living on the streets. They do not have a family to provide for their needs. Rather, they earn their own income through begging, stealing, garbage scavenging and selling different materials. No matter how hard they work, all they earn will be hardly sufficient to eat a little food. Hence, this cycle continues and without their knowledge, they become engaged in child labor.
These children do not have a place to call home. They eat, sleep and live in railway stations, bus stands and different alleyways. As a result, they are constantly exposed to exploitation and abuse. Many girls fall into the trap of sex rackets. Even if they are sexually abused or beaten, no one is there to stand for their rights and raise their voice for them.
Children on the streets rarely get to eat a nice meal. Day and night, they work hard to fill their little stomach, but it is rarely enough to develop properly. They also don’t get the proper nourishment a child of their age should receive and any medical care when they fall sick. Their development becomes stunted, slowly extinguishing the hope and promise of their lives.
Believers Church runs two homes for runaway and orphaned children found on the streets of New Delhi called Asha Grih. They are licensed by the government of India and children are enrolled through the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of the Delhi Government.
Children who are rescued from the streets are placed in either the boys home or girls home. They grow up there by learning to love and care for each other. From morning till the time they go back to their bed, our staff are there to care for their needs. Each day, they will serve them with hot delicious meals, comb their hair, make them bath if they are very small kids, take them for health checkups, provides them treatments when they are sick and tuck them to their bed with love and care. They now have a family to care for them and hope for their future.
When they fall sick, our staff are there to take care of them. They take them to hospitals and provide them medical checkups and treatments. The staff intensely care for the health of each child who grow up there.
Asha Grih also ensures quality education of each child who is restored in the homes. We enroll them in good schools and provide them with sufficient supplies for their schooling. The staff assist them in their studies and with their help and encouragement, children can improve in their studies.
When children are restored from the streets, Asha Grih ensures their that their life is safe from exploitation, begging and child labor. Their world full of suffering and fear is replaced with compassion, care and security. Children can now sleep comfortably without worrying about their next meal or the fear of getting exploited. They are safe and can grow up as healthy and skillful individuals there.
