“Mostly in our villages,” shared a participant named Urmila, “women never visit doctors during pregnancy and do not know how to take vitamins and care for themselves. As a result, they give birth to weak children and they also get sick and even die. So, as we have learned in the training, we have to educate them and teach them the importance of visiting the doctors and taking care of themselves during their pregnancy.”

Village myths were also exposed and addressed. “In the village when someone gets diarrhea,” said Kamini, “we would ask them not to drink water because we thought if they drank water, they would pass more. But through this training I learned that we should give more water to the diarrhea patient so that they will not be dehydrated.”

Nine women from various local churches in the diocese participated.

The purpose of the event was to build quality trainers who will create health awareness in their own localities. Julee (Women’s Fellowship) and Rossama (general nurse) taught sessions about basic health and hygiene. After each teaching session there was a time for the women to demonstrate the lesson material through skits.

The women were very happy to learn how to care for their own health and that of others.

This program was part of Believers Church’s initiative to make vital health information available to thousands of communities.

The women learned much and were eager to share the information with others. One of them, Madhu, had been planning to arrange the marriage of her 17-year-old daughter. She was thankful for the healthcare training, which helped her to understand the dangers associated with child marriage.

“Now I have decided to arrange marriage for my daughter in her proper age,” Madhu said. “I will also let others know about this fact and everything that I have learned.”

Believers Church Women’s Fellowship is working to educate two million women about basic healthcare in the next two years.

On 24th April, the diocese officially inaugurated the new Healthcare Project of Believers Church. Dr. P. Kuganantham MBBS, City Health Officer of Chennai, delivered the inaugural address after the special guests lit the traditional lamp. He spoke of the importance of health awareness, and appreciated Believers Church for improving the lifestyle of India’s poor and needy communities.

Later that day, special guest Dr. Senthil Kumar (Health Inspector) taught the women about tuberculosis and its treatment. He offered to provide free medicine so Women’s Fellowship can help treat TB patients. Dr. Senthil was happy to see the women engaging in the session with many questions.

At the end of the four-day seminar, Bishop Dr. Samuel Mathew urged the women to go with a vision to help the least, the poor and the needy. The women will now travel to various villages teaching healthcare classes in rural areas. Believers Church is working across the subcontinent with the goal of educating two million women about health and hygiene.

Villagers in this place previously used contaminated water directly from a tube well. Ranjan, a member of the BioSand department, explained how the BioSand filters would purify their drinking water.

Bidya and the other community members were grateful to Believers Church for providing such a great help to their families.

“To get clean water in our village is very hard,” said a villager named Bidya, “because everywhere we dig the well or hand pump, the water is full of arsenic and it even gives a bad smell. I have personally seen this BioSand filter in some other house and wanted one because it gives clean water.” Bidya and the other community members were grateful to Believers Church for providing such a great help to their families.

Mr. Biju Lankagiri, president of the local YMCA, chaired the event. Metropolitan Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma addressed the guests, encouraging the YMCA to stand firm for religious values. Valiya Metropolitan Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom then gave a message of blessing.

During the program, Metropolitan Dr. K.P. Yohannan offered the support of Believers Church in YMCA’s endeavor. Helping to start this school for mentally challenged children is one of the many ways Believers Church is working together with the Body of Christ to uplift the underprivileged.

“The main cause of not having toilet seat in home was finance,” said local people.They were aware of the environmental issues surrounding open defecation, and knew the importance of having toilets. But they could not afford to change things.

“I have been trying to build a toilet,” said a villager named Gulab, “but due to lack of finance I could not make it. I thank the church for this facility. My wife is very much happy after seeing the toilet in our field.”

Another woman, Kiran, said, “I have a grown up girl who was shy to go in open area, but what to do? Being poor, we were not able to build a toilet for our girls. But now we are happy that we can use the new toilet at any time.”

20 sanitation facilities for poverty-stricken families were constructed.
