Believers Church Diocese of Kolkata celebrated International Literacy Day on 8th September 2016 by launching 13 new Adult Literacy Units in different needy places, opening the door of opportunity for scores of illiterate women to empower themselves through education.
In these places, hundreds of women were also given free study materials such as literacy text books, slates, slate pencils, and chalks. There were competitions conducted for the women who have already finished their one year course in Adult Literacy Class, like quick writing contest, reading competition and memorization competition, among others. And the church distributed prizes to the winners of these competitions.
Speaking at the function held in one of the places, where over 100 illiterate women came to join adult literacy class, Bishop Dr. Juria Bardhan, the Bishop of Diocese of Kolkata said, “Poverty kills education and education kill poverty”. His speech indeed inspired the women and ignited passion in their hearts to learn and to be educated.
